Chad Buffington Exhibit at the “Underground”

The Chad Buffington collection of watercolors drew accolades from visitors to the Underground for First Friday held on May 2nd. Micky Smith entertained guests with folk songs and sing-a-longs.

Watercolors flow with ease from the brush of Chad Buffington, a self-taught artist adept in multiple media. His faithfully-rendered portraits have made him a favorite with local institutions for commissioned work that graces their walls. His portrait of Pennsylvania Academy of Music Founders Frances Veri and Michael Jamanis will soon be on permanent display in the new Pennsylvania Academy of Music Building in downtown Lancaster.

Buffington's art is inviting at a distance. The viewer eventually realizes that the picture is not a photograph but a painting. The assumption is that the work must be oil, but upon close inspection the artist has rendered the subject in watercolor. Young Buffington's work is not raw talent but a highly refined talent. Take a look at the detail of the brush stroke in the graphic above.

Jim Folker Headlines Tim Truman Exhibit at the Underground

The artwork of Tim Truman and music of Jim Folker created an evening of “ Fantasy, Comics and Rock 'n' Roll” at the Lancaster County Democrats’ “Underground” at last evening's First Friday event.

Tim Truman, freelance illustrator, cartoonist, and author, has built an award-winning career spanning 30 years and a variety of genres. Truman has done projects for a variety of comic book publishers, including Star Wars, Tarzan, Justice League of America, Green lantern, The Lone Ranger and countless others.

Jim Folker is a Lititz-based acoustic performer who has played venues throughout the area for over 15 years. Although billed as a country artist, his influences range from Vince Gill and Jackson Browne to Chicago and the Beatles.

Jim and Tim provided the music for the three hour event as patrons danced, listened and viewed an array of Tim Truman's extensive artwork. They were joined from time to time by the LCDC Treasurer, Micky Smith.

Wank Collection of Political Memorabilia

Political activism runs in the Wank family.  Solomon Wank, Lewis Audenreid Professor of History Emeritus, Franklin & Marshall College, and his artist wife Barbara, have been marching for peace and campaigning for their favorite candidates for decades.

In 1972, Barbara coordinated the Lancaster office for presidential candidate George McGovern. When McGovern lost to Richard Nixon, she was stuck with all the leftover signs and bumper stickers that no longer had immediate utility.  She gave them to her student son, David.

And thus began David Wank’s years-long obsession for accumulating political buttons, posters, bumper stickers, and the odd Jimmy Carter knit ski cap, from campaigns both local and national.  Even after David became Dr. David Wank, Professor of Sociology at Japan’s Sophia University, Sol and Barbara continued to toss discarded buttons and such into the substantial pile their son had left in their attic.

The Wank house on Walnut Street now has a “sold” sign in the front yard and the Wanks are downsizing to a newly constructed apartment building in Downtown Lancaster where there is no room for such indulgences.  With their son’s blessing, they have generously donated his collection of both Democratic and Republican political items to the Lancaster County Democratic Committee.

It will be on display for the public at Democratic headquarters, 53 N. Duke St., upstairs in Suite 218, this coming First Friday, February 1, from 5pm to 8pm.  Light refreshments will be served.

Please visit www.lancasterarts.com to learn more about Downtown Lancaster’s new tradition of First Friday celebrations and for a listing of all exhibitors for February’s event.

GPor – GPor finds inspiration from the forms and shapes of the natural world around her. Working loosely in acrylic her work speaks to spontaneity and immediacy. Many of the pieces are available as note cards & prints.  The artist states, “I am so overtaken by water sky scenes that I surrender myself to the experience and barely remember painting it....the colors of sunset and breezes off water create a fulfilling piece of work…painting that is just an extension, a form of communicating the feeling of empowerment..." See her work at www.musesandfriends.com/GPorHome.html.

LM Bolger – Raised in New York, Ms Bolger now divides her time with her family in Lancaster County and at home in Bluffton, SC.  Ms. Bolger attended Art & Design in New York and over the years has experimented with many types of mediums, including oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels.  She is driven to challenge herself in a variety of techniques, such as Sume painting, watercolors on silk, photography and sculpture.  Her deep appreciation of ancient and contemporary Asian masters has inspired her own interpretations of Nature’s beauty and perfection.  [Ms Bolger’s daughter is Cocalico Committeewoman Barbara Brown.]

Linda Heller - In the space halfway between reality and the consciousness of spirit, where mystical and other worldly forces seem only to extend the realm of possibilities, this artist finds her greatest resources. Her illustrations are a tranquil expression of her feelings and philosophy and yet can be universal in appeal.  It is the unique blend of creativity and her spiritual nature that makes her fantasy art so enchantingly beautiful. Ms. Heller is a graduate of Pennsylvania College of Art and Design. See her work at www.linmheller.com. [Linda Heller’s husband is Bill Heller, Cocalico District Leader.]
