Now is the Time
Barry Russell,
Lancaster City
Now is the
time to come to the defense of our community. The County
Commissioners' plan to eliminate the Human Relations
Commission will have a significant negative impact on
Lancaster County. Aside from the obvious practical matters
of ending the efforts of an organization that promotes
understanding and defends those who are wronged, the end
of The Human Relations Commission will be a heavy black
mark against our county's reputation. We are associated
with tolerance and understanding from our early history to
the present imagery of Amish and modern life coexisting
side by side.
Of course
there are neighbors who currently do not receive this
protection. Our LGBT friends can still be fired from their
jobs or forced from their homes simply for being who they
are. This is a sad horrible injustice that should be soon
addressed.
Still, the
setbacks from the elimination of the HRC reach all across
the community, from young to old, to all races and
religions, even to our small business community. History
shows that money will leave our county from an action such
as eliminating the Human Rights Commission.
The time
for action is now. Tell your friends, neighbors, people at
work. Our community is in danger and we need their help.
There are upcoming rallies to attend and the County
Commissioners Meeting on July 29th. Please plan to be
there to show your support.
I am also
asking you to take the time today to write a letter to the
commissioners asking them to keep the Human Relations
Commission. Please do it now, today. If you send a letter
to the email address below, it will be added to a notebook
that will be presented to the Commissioners. A big thick
notebook of letters will be a strong visual image of the
support The Human Relations Commission has in our county.
Send your letter to:
