Penn Manor Democratic Committee Presents Its First-Ever Educational Award For Community Involvement To Senior Reilly Noetzel

The Penn Manor Democratic Committee awarded its First Annual Scholarship for Community Involvement to graduating senior Reilly Noetzel at the May 21, 2009 Penn Manor 42nd Annual Commencement Awards Ceremony.  The Penn Manor Democrats were in attendance to present a $500 check to a young man who had been selected through an application and interview process that just delighted the scholarship committee.  For the selection committee, it was an amazing experience to learn about all of the selfless activities in which Penn Manor graduates participate while still maintaining excellent scholastic grades and going about their sports and other extracurricular activities.

Reilly Noetzel's contributions included a variety of activities beginning in the ninth grade and continuing throughout his years at Penn Manor High School.  His after-school time was spent primarily helping others.  He volunteers at the Humane League and with the help of his family, fostered a mother dog and her seven pups.  He works to secure donations for the Heifer Project which purchases livestock to be sent to third-world communities to assist in their economic development. With Peer Helpers and National Honor Society he contributes to service projects such as tutoring peers and younger children, working to keep the schools drug-free and registering voters.

In a recommendation letter from a community member he was described as "such a comfort to the mother of an autistic child whom Reilly mentored, tutored, introduced to teachers and peers, paving the way for her son to participate in difficult social situations."

In replying to some of the committee's questions, Reilly came across as an articulate, committed young citizen who is enriched by helping others and does his best to see that his efforts impact the lives of others educationally, socially, economically and politically.  He will be attending Franklin and Marshall College this fall and hopes to continue many of his current activities while eagerly searching out ways to make a difference at the collegiate and adult level.
