Understanding the codes under the Precinct ID column Street List Code - District The names of all registered voters are grouped into street lists so that poll workers can verify that a person who shows up to the polling place on election day is registered to vote and is voting at the correct polling place. These list contain names, addresses and party affiliation if any. These lists are not available to the general public for reasons of privacy. Generally, in Lancaster County, district boundaries are the same as school district boundaries. The district name is similar to the name of the school district, but not always. Ward - Precinct A ward is a subdivision of a district. Precincts are subdivisions of a ward. The precinct is the basic unit of the political system. Ideally, it should contain no more than 1500 voters, but many in Lancaster County exceed that limit. Polling places are located in precincts. Wards can be named or numbered. Some wards have no precincts because their population is small and does not need to be subdivided. Municipality Municipalities are separate entities from districts, wards and precincts. They can be cities, boroughs, or townships. School District School Districts are geographical entities that provide public education to school age children. They are separate entities from districts, wards and precincts. They can service cities, boroughs, towns and/or townships or combinations thereof. The precinct system serves electorates for school districts, municipalities, state house and senate districts, congressional districts and statewide and national offices.
