Imagine for a moment a Supreme Court nominee of Barack Obama, or any Democratic president, going off on a wild rant accusing Republicans on the Judiciary Committee of being involved in a right-wing conspiracy against him. Imagine that he accused the Bushes of undermining his nomination out of revenge. Fox News and Rush Limbaugh would go crazy. The Republicans would immediately accuse this court nominee of being a biased, left-wing extremist unfit to serve on the Supreme Court. And they would be correct.
By his tirade at the Sept. 27 Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Brett Kavanaugh revealed himself for what he is. Kavanaugh is a partisan unfit to serve on the Supreme Court, regardless of the results of the FBI investigation. Politics are woven into the very fabric of the electoral branches of government. They have no place at all in the judicial branch of government. Nominees for the highest court in the land should be as neutral and nonpartisan as possible and acceptable to both parties. Someone like Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, who was never even given the courtesy of a hearing before the Judiciary Committee.
