Dear Editor:
“Trump NOT Exonerated by Mueller Report” should be an LNP headline. Many Lancastrians believe the lies by the President and his Attorney General that the report cleared the President of all crimes. Republican legislators, including Smucker, have parroted these messages and the President’s argument that Congress should end their investigations and “move on.”
Those who have read the Mueller Report (including Republican Rep. Justin Amash) know the evidence for Presidential misconduct is persuasive, including:
- The Trump campaign had over 200 contacts with Russians and welcomed their help.
- Trump engaged in at least 10 specific incidents of obstruction of justice, many of which include evidence necessary for a criminal charge were Trump not the President.
- Mueller did not charge Trump with crimes because the Dept. of Justice policy prohibits indicting a sitting President.
- The report’s scope was limited to: Russian election interference, coordination by Americans with this attack, and Presidential obstruction of this investigation. Mueller did not investigate other possible Trump criminal activity including: violations of the Constitution Emoluments clause, campaign finance laws, money laundering and other activities that could enable foreign governments and others to influence Trump’s Presidential decisions.
LNP has an obligation to emphatically challenge the administration’s serious mischaracterizations of the Mueller Report. These falsehoods will influence readers’ opinions regarding the need for Congress to continue the investigations into Trump’s misconduct. We need to know the basis for possible impeachment.
